Anthony Gordon will be joining Newcastle from Everton after the two clubs agreed a fee for the player.
The Magpies will pay nearly $50 million for the winger, with another $6 million in possible ad-ons. According to Sky Sports, Gordon passed his medical at Newcastle on Saturday.
Move away from Merseyside had been coming
The 21-year-old forward has been linked with a transfer away from Merseyside ever since the summer.
Chelsea previously had a similar $50 million bid rejected by Everton in August and were reportedly ready to up their offer. However, Everton were adamant that the player was not for sale.
However, the Toffees have caved in their position regarding Gordon. Everton’s stance on the situation changed when the player made it clear that he wanted to leave.
Gordon will now move from the relegation zone with Everton to a possible Champions League place with Newcastle.
Along with the fee, the Toffees have also added a sell-on clause as well. This means that Everton will receive a small piece of any future transfer, should Newcastle sell Gordon in the coming years.
Newcastle hope Gordon can progress under Eddie Howe
While he is considered a top prospect, Gordon has just three goals in all competitions this season.
After scoring twice in his team’s first four Premier League games, the winger has managed to net just one goal since August. The feisty forward has also racked up seven yellow cards in 18 total matches during the current campaign.
Nevertheless, Newcastle will hope that the talented winger can help boost the club’s scoring. Although the Magpies have excelled this season, they have a bit of a scoring issue. In fact, Newcastle currently have the sixth-most goals in England’s top flight.
Along with bringing in Gordon, the Magpies have also announced a contract extension for Kieran Trippier.
The full back has agreed to remain with the club until the summer of 2025. He previously joined the team from Atletico Madrid one year ago and has become of Newcastle’s most important players.
