Liverpool edged Wolves on Tuesday, 1-0, to advance to the FA Cup fourth round. A glorious strike from Harvey Elliott guided the Reds passed a pesky Wolves team. Manager Jürgen Klopp made eight changes to his starting lineup compared to the previous meeting between the teams. The refresh seemed certainly seemed to help.
Tuesday’s match had to be played as the two clubs drew, 2-2, on Jan.7. The previous match certainly came with controversy. Wolves were denied a late winner after a goal by Toti was disallowed for being offside.
Replays, however, were difficult to tell whether or not a Wolves player was actually offside. Wolves head coach Julen Lopetegui even later suggested that a tactical camera proved the goal should have stood. Nevertheless, the match was replayed in the West Midlands.
Elliott stunner steals the show
Midfielder Harvey Elliott put Liverpool on the board in the 13th minute. The youngster scored a screamer from distance over the head of a diving Jose Sa. Although the Wolves goalkeeper was off his line a bit, it was a beautiful strike by Elliott.
Lopetegui wanted the goal to be chalked off, as he thought there was a hand ball at the other end of the pitch. However, a power outage in the area affected VAR from intervening. Television replays suggested that a hand ball call would have been very harsh anyway.
The visitors thought they doubled their lead twenty minutes later after Fabio Carvalho put the ball into the net. Although the Portuguese attacker was judged to be offside when he received the pass and took the shot. Elliott’s goal would turn out to be the lone score of the match.
