Christian Pulisic could be dealt a major blow, as Manchester City are reportedly targeting one of AC Milan’s stars to replace Ilkay Gundogan.

Eliminated from the UEFA Champions League and slipping out of the Premier League title race, Manchester City are reportedly preparing for a squad rebuild ahead of the 2025–26 season. Among the names on their shortlist is one of Christian Pulisic’s star teammates at AC Milan as a potential replacement for Ilkay Gundogan.

Pep Guardiola signed a contract extension back in November and has been given the green light by City’s leadership to oversee a new phase for the club. A key part of that plan includes reshaping the midfield with fresh talent as the team looks to phase out underperforming or aging players.

According to Sky Sports‘ Sacha Tavolieri, Manchester City view Tijjani Reijnders as an ideal successor to Gundogan. The Dutch midfielder has emerged as a standout performer at Milan, impressing with his consistency and versatility.

Following a brief stint at FC Barcelona, Gundogan returned to Manchester City, but at 34 years old, he has struggled to reclaim a regular starting role. Though the club exercised a one-year extension on his contract, Guardiola addressed the uncertainty surrounding the veteran’s future, stating, “What’s going to happen, I don’t know.”

AC Milan are reportedly asking €65 million—excluding bonuses—for Reijnders. Despite the steep valuation, City are believed to be willing to meet the price. The Dutchman recently renewed his contract with Milan on March 3, but a move this summer remains on the table as he eyes the next step in his career.

Milan and the potential departure of several stars

Despite standout performances from Pulisic, Milan have endured a turbulent 2024–25 campaign. Inconsistent form has left the club short of its preseason goals, fueling speculation that several key players could depart San Siro this summer.

Joao Felix appears likely to leave following a disappointing loan spell, while Mike Maignan, Theo Hernandez, and Rafael Leao have all been linked with moves away in recent months. Pulisic is reportedly set to sign a contract extension, securing his future in Serie A, but the broader picture remains uncertain.

Milan currently sit ninth in the Serie A standings with 51 points from 32 matches—eight points behind Juventus and the Champions League qualification places. Failure to qualify for European competition next season could force the club into difficult financial decisions, making Reijnders’ potential sale a more realistic scenario.
